Controlling What You can Control

I don’t know about you, but I have been encouraged by what I’ve seen from people.

You don’t agree? Well, you are looking at the toilet paper hoarders. Don’t look at those people. Look to the people making the best out of what they are given!

I love seeing people make the best of their circumstances. With two little ones at home, we have watched A LOT of Frozen 2 and Olaf perfectly describes how I’m feeling right now.

He’s right. The snowman is totally right. Things feel totally out of control, but we can control how we handle this situation.

Here are a few examples of people doing their best to be positive.

What awesome people have you seen doing awesome things??? We would love to hear about them!

Get Moving, Get a Schedule, and Give Grace!

Thank you to Nicole Campbell, one of our fabulous Board Members, for sharing this adorable picture. There can not be many things cuter than little children practicing yoga!

IMG_5932.JPG

Nicole has some awesome suggestions for what families can do while at home for a few weeks. These are her “main musts” when staying at home with kids!

  1. Limit screen time. It’s tempting to just plop down and watch movies, but we all feel better if we play and stay active instead. Music is a great alternative but make sure it’s not straight kid music, or you’ll lose your mind.

  2. Keep a normal schedule. I try to line up naps and meals the same as they’re used to at school. Kids thrive on routines.

  3. Most importantly, give grace to them and yourself. It’s hard work to work from home and manage kids. There’s not a perfect way to do it, and we’re all bound to make mistakes and lose our patience. Just forgive yourself quickly for mistakes and keep trying to make it work.

Thank you, Nicole, for your wise words. The Wallace is grateful to have you on board. (Get it? On Board? Hahahaha!) We love hearing from out Board Members, and be on the look out to hear from more!

At home?

The Wallace is all about community and since our community might be at home more in the next couple of weeks, we thought sharing some ideas about activities or things you can do at home might be helpful!

If you’re like me, staying at home can be difficult. I love being out and about and seeing people. I have compiled a list of things to do for yourself and for your family.

Choose joy while at home, and I hope these ideas help!

  1. Get up and get dressed! My friend, Katy, works from home often. I texted her for advice for this blog, and this is what she said, “Get up! Get ready for the day!” Your creative juices will start flowing, and you can finally get started on that to-do list that’s been sitting there for months.

  2. Watch a movie that you loved from your childhood. Bringing up those fun and carefree memories will surely put a smile on your face. I am going to watch Beauty and the Beast. What are you going to watch?

  3. Try a new recipe! Pinterest is full of easy recipes that you can follow. Bake some sweets or try a new soup, either way it will be so yummy!

  4. Read that book sitting on your bedside table. I know you have one. I have a few actually, and maybe I’ll be able to read all of them. What books are you wanting to read?

  5. GO OUTSIDE! There is nothing off-limits about walking about your back yard or up and down your street. Vitamin D is so good for you.

  6. Facetime family that you haven’t talk to in a while. How nice will it be to SEE them and their smiles. That will definitely make you smile!

  7. Play some games - card games, board games, made up games, all the games! I follow an awesome blogger on instagram, homegrowntraditions, and she has a saved stories called 5-Minute Family Games. Most of them use household items, and they are so fun.

  8. Create something! Whether it be a short-story, music, a painting, any type of craft… I love creating, and creating something new helps you think and learn!

Do y’all have some ideas about what you could do at home? What brings you joy?

Yonder!

Have you heard that Yonder is coming?

What is Yonder?

What is site-specific theater?

What is immersive theater?

Have no fear! Kaitlin is here, and I am ready to answer these questions!

Yonder is an adventure.

Imagine the scene: 1928 Levelland, Texas. The Wallace Theater. The characters of Yonder are wandering across space and time. They have to work together to find their way home and they need your help. Through this adventure, we will learn about their back-stories and why this group of people have been ‘Yondered.’

Yonder Invitation.png

We have been advertising Yonder as site-specific theater. What is site-specific theater?

Site-specific theater is any type of theatrical production designed to be performed at a unique, specially adapted location. The Wallace is proud to be the unique and specially adapted location for Yonder.

But Kaitlin, you ask, how was The Wallace chosen for this opportunity?

The Texas Tech Vernacular Music Center Elegant Savages Orchestra performed Nosferatu at the Wallace in October of 2018. (I wish I could have seen it. I can tell by the pictures that I missed out.)

Driving home from Nosferatu, Dr. Christopher Smith and Roger Landes were inspired to write the Yonder show. They loved the history of The Wallace. They could see its potential, and they wanted to create a story that enhanced its charm.

Nosferatu is a silent film. The Elegant Savages Orchestra played a live soundtrack for the film showing at The Wallace.

What is immersive theater?

I know there is immersive theater outside of West Texas, but I had never experienced it in person. To learn more about immersive theater, I googled it. I found Lux Technical. They are a technical company that helps put on productions for immersive theater, and Lux Technical defines immersive theater as a presentation or theatrical form or work that breaks the “fourth wall” that traditionally separates the performer from the audience both physically and verbally. This definition helped me understand why Yonder is so different, and by different, I mean awesome! This is a first of it’s kind show in West Texas. As an audience member experiencing Yonder, you will be able to choose what character to follow, and the actors will be performing all around you and throughout the Wallace.

You do not want to miss this adventure. April 16th has already SOLD OUT. Friday, April 17th and Saturday, April 18th still have tickets. We have individual tickets, group tickets, and shuttle tickets from Cheers Shuttle! Some even include a free beverage! YES, Sign me up! There is even a special code for students, TTUSPC. Prices on tickets will raise after Sunday, March 9th! Get your tickets ASAP at www.wallacetheater.com/events.

Wallace Weekend Players

Wallace Weekend Players learning about character development.

Wallace Weekend Players learning about character development.

Pretend with me for a minute or two that you are in Middle School. You are looking to find where you fit, and you hear about an exciting new program that will be able to introduce you to a whole new experience.

You’re standing in a circle with your friends during the second class, and I tell you to pretend you’re holding a ball of electricity. You have the use your whole body to pass the ball to your friend across the circle and yell, “Whoosh!” When your friend catches the electricity ball, they have to yell, “Whoa!” and pass the electricity along to others in the circle.

“Whoosh!” “Whoa!” “Whoosh!” “Whoa!”

“ZAP!” Oh No! Another ball of electricity entered the circle. Keep paying attention. Don’t miss catching them!

“Whoa!” “Whoosh!” “Zap!” “Whoosh!” “Whoa!” “Zap!”

“FREAK OUT!” EVERYONE yells together! Warm up over.

Can you hear the laughter? Can you see the smiles on the faces in the circle? Can you feel the energy of something new and exciting?

This is Wallace Weekend Players.

Wallace Weekend Players is a community theater program developed for Levelland Middle School Students to provide opportunities for students to develop skill sets including critical thinking, creativity, self-esteem, self-discipline, empathy, teamwork and cooperation, leadership, and public speaking. This program started February 1st and just completed its fourth class!  The classes are held at the Levelland Middle School to meet students where they are.

18 students have joined Wallace Weekend Players, and they are in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  The students are developing friendships and have a wonderful willingness and excitement to collaborate.

Students are learning together from director, Cory Lawson.  Cory is a PHD student in Arts Administration and Directing at Texas Tech University.  Cory brings in a guest leader for every class, and by doing so the students learn different aspects of production. The goal of the program is to expose students to new opportunities through theater to help them find a place where their skills and interests fit and flourish.  Over the first few sessions, students have worked on the basics of theater developed skills in team-building and creativity, play-writing, costume design, and character development. The semester will end with the production of a play that the students have written, created, and produced themselves from their new knowledge of theater.

Sip and Swirl 2019

As a tried and true event that captures the essence of downtown Levelland, Sip and Swirl is one of our favorites! We enjoyed seeing so many of you at The Wallace as tasted wine from Farmhouse Vineyards and enjoyed artwork by Kristy Kristinek. The wine pull was a blast and we were able to raise $1300 for our theater restoration project thanks to you all!
